The Radical Book Shop was founded in 1914 by disillusioned social worker Howard “Harry” Lewis Udell (1870–1918) and his blind wife, Lillian Evangeline (Hiller) Udell (1867–1935), a respected lecturer on literature. Their daughters, Geraldine (1903–1998) and Phyllis (1900–1973), would assist and became integral to the running of the shop.
